I only took a week off Instagram. I thought it would be longer. But one week was enough for me to get some space to stop and reflect and actually get excited about Instagram again. In a way, it motivated me to create and get off my ass and make something, anything! One week off Instagram was also enough to show me that I do actually have a good relationship with social media.
These are the main reasons I use Instagram for:
Connection with family and friends
Being so far away from my family, it’s difficult to know what’s going on with them all the time. It’s always nice to see what everyone is up to because I only really pay attention to a handful of people on social media—the ones I truly care about.
When I didn’t have Instagram, I realised how much I used it as a tool to search for things like recipes or events or brands and companies. I realised how Instagram has become the new google for me
Documentation and creation
It’s my favourite method of curating a documentation of my life and it motivates me to keep doing it because there’s instant connection once I’ve posted
I think it’s important to take a break from social media because we all know how addictive it can be. And whether we are aware of it or not, there is always a chance of comparing yourself to others. I’ve found that the best way to use social media is consciously. It’s knowing when you’re scrolling just to scroll, or that you can’t seem to stay present in a conversation because your eyes are glued to your phone, or knowing that subconsciously, you keep comparing yourself to others and feeling shit about yourself. When you’re aware of how easy it is to fall into these habits, you can stop them by auditing who you follow, managing how much time you spend on social media, and understanding how you feel when you’re using it.
